Visible Reminders
Words are "hidden" within the larger paintings from the Visual Reminders series.
These words contain concepts refleecting the learning that is cabala.
Cabala is an ancient Jewish philosophy built upon a tradition of mystical interpretation of Scripture. Cabala may be spelled using many variants including: cabala, cabbala, cabalah, kabala, kabbala, kabbalah and qabalah. (English dictionaries show the preferred usage as "cabala" although many books in English on the subject use "kabbalah.")
One author calls cabala, “ . . . a guide book for the soul in its return path upward.”
Cabalistic thought holds that everything in the universe is connected; thus, there are no coincidences in life. Every moment is a potential doorway to celestial guidance and inspiration. Study helps integrates the self with the cosmos.
One reason for hiding words behind paint is that I believe art works on the Jungian unconsciousness, conscious knowledge not being required. Viewers may recognize a message lays buried behind the paint, but that message remains unreadable in its entirety, even when examined closely. Anyone who consciously tries to "get the message" will not. Yet, in this striving, I believe viewers will succeed unconsciously . . . one of the many mysteries of life and art.
Within the Visual Reminders paintings, I created a grid of seeming order by hidding words in horizontal lines along with horizontal bands of color that were further ordered (and disordered) into a grid by seemingly random vertical drips.
The title for Visible Reminders comes from a line of poetry by T. S. Eliot:
