How long did it take you to make that?
It depends on which piece, but generally my ideas "incubate" a long time and I usually work on several pieces at once, in different stages of production. Some ideas are quickly accomplished (several days at least) and others take months. It doesn't seem to depend on the size; it's "finished" when I'm satisfied with my work.
How do you decide how much to charge for your work?
Difficulty of structuring the sculpture, special firing requirements and type of patina used determine the cost of a sculpture. Sometimes I need to figure in the cost and difficulty of transportation or installation. Of one-of-a-kind sculptures are more valuable than second editions, though it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference. Bronze or other castings are the most expensive, but also the most permanent.
Where do you get your ideas?
They come to me while I'm thinking about other things. Sometimes when I'm working something out with God I begin to understand something big he is trying to teach me. I can create a sculpture about an idea a lot better than I can talk about it. Once I dreamed how to do an entire project, done to details on how to glaze it. It reminded me of just how the Native Americans dream their designs! That was exciting.
Why are many of your subjects Biblical?
I've heard that every story written has already been told in the Bible. Perhaps this is true. To me the Bible is a crucial record of who God is and who I am as His child. Everything that happens to me, every feeling, every need I have, every decision I will ever make has been made by someone in the Bible. Mostly those in the Bible didn't make very good decisions but God usually bailed them out. I can learn something from them.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am continually seeking inspiration in life and through my relationship with God. Click here to learn what I am working on and exploring now.
