Longley-Cook Memorial, Cornell University

"The new black locust wood and quarry stone bench arrangement in front of the Mann Library addition is the creation of artist Rebecca Thompson. The artist intended it to be a place for community seating and to evoke the geographical beauty and geologic history of Cornell University's natural setting. Students, faculty, and Mann Library staff chose the words engraved on the benches' steel bands to evoke the shared values of the university community. It is the hope of both the arist and Mann Library that the memory of Jane Blauvelt Longley-Cook, a woman who strongly felt that the presence of beauty and commitment to community could enhance our daily lives, is well represented in this effort."
