Pilates is an exercise modality named after its original creator, Joseph H. Pilates. He developed and applied these exercises as an intern during World War I to help rehabilitate patients using resistance and stretching.
The first Pilates reformer apparatus was developed with equipment fashioned from bedsprings. Today the Pilates technique encompasses more than 500 controlled, precise movement exercises designed to stretch and strengthen muscles of the body.
Pilates exercises require practice and concentration, working the body and mind. They focus on the core muscles of the abdomen, back and hip extensors. To fully benefit from the exercise it is important to perform them with precision, according to one's fitness level.
